Estate sales have low-key become my entire personality. You can usually find me treasure hunting at these sales on Saturdays, but if it weren’t for an estate sale popping up in my neighborhood last year, I would have no idea what they are. These sales are fantastic for collectors, resellers, designers, really anyone looking for a bargain—and It girls in the making. I’ve run into so many cool girls on my estate sale adventures and we’re all on the hunt for vintage finds and one-of-a-kind items you can’t link on LTK. 

If you’ve never been to an estate sale though, it can be intimidating. However, if you’re ready to start perusing these sales like a pro, I’ve rounded some of the best estate sale tips for beginners below!

What are estate sales?

First things first, what even is an estate sale? Estate sales typically occur on weekends in a person’s home, where nearly everything inside is for sale. Most of the time, these sales happen due to major life events like a big move, downsizing, or the death of a homeowner. The goal is to sell as much as possible in a short amount of time. These sales include a wide variety of items from clothing, furniture, home decor, jewelry, art and accessories. 

Estate sales offer an opportunity to not only purchase incredible vintage pieces, but you also get to step inside someone else’s home. I’ve been to estate sales in mansions and homes that have gone seemingly untouched for decades. I’ve explored neighborhoods that never would have been on my radar without the sales themselves. In short, it’s fun! They’re truly a feast for the senses, even if you don’t end up purchasing anything. 

How do you find estate sales?

Perhaps the best estate sale tip for beginners is to bookmark Estatesales.net . This is the go-to spot for browsing estate sales, no matter where you live. You can find sales near you by searching your zip code or city. Once you see the results, you can tap on a sale you’re interested in and many sellers include preview pictures of items that will be for sale. Pro tip: sellers will usually wait to release the address of the sale until a day or two before, so don’t worry if it’s not posted right away. 

Another way to stay up to date is social media. There are definitely content creators who share estate sales, and this is my favorite way to learn about sales near me. If you’re in the DC area, be sure to follow @maddytheb—she shares upcoming sales every Wednesday and even does video previews!

What should I know before I go?

Every estate sale is different, and each city surely has its own vibe, but I wish I had known a few things before my first shopping experience.

How to get in

Depending on the size of the sale, there may be a wait to go inside. In my city, most sales have a notepad by the door for you to sign in. You then wait until your name is called to enter the sale. It’s hard to know which sales will be popular, but from my experience, I know there will be a wait if the home is full of designer items. It’s also always helpful to check if there’s a list when you arrive, especially if there’s a long line. I’ve seen people get upset because they went straight to the back of the line without signing in first, which cost them valuable time. I should also note that if you see this happening, let them know to sign in!

Hold the snacks

Every time I head out to a sale, it’s so tempting to stop for a Starbucks beforehand! I always resist though, because food and drink is usually not allowed inside these sales. Also for what it’s worth, there are usually no public restrooms either. Leave your house with a full belly, and don’t forget to take a bathroom break!

Parking and accessibility

I always check in the listing if there are parking restrictions or notes on accessibility. I like knowing what the parking situation is in any event, but it’s especially helpful to know if there are neighborhood rules and regulations. (You don’t want to get towed!) Some listings will also note things like hills or stairs that are required to enter the home, which is important for anyone who may have specific accessibility needs. It’s good information to have if you plan on purchasing furniture or larger items as well.

Large item logistics

Every sale I’ve been to very clearly states the sellers will not help you move furniture or large items to your car. If you know you’d like to purchase a chair or sofa, be sure you shop with friends who can help you load it to your car! Estate sale companies can oftentimes recommend a moving service to assist you too. Since these sales are short, know that you have to get your purchases out of the house usually within 24 hours.

Should I bring anything?

You don’t need much, but there are a few things you may want to have with you to set yourself up for estate sale success.

• Multiple forms of payment. Payment is dependent on the company running the sale. Some may only take cash, while others take cards, Venmo, Cash App, etc. I always bring cash with me, just in case.
• A tape measure. If you know you’re looking for furniture or art, know your measurements. All sales are final, so having a tape measure on hand can come in clutch. I’ve also measured my trunk, just to be sure my items will fit in the car!
• Comfy clothes. So, to be honest, I don’t follow this rule all the time and have gotten a tiny bit dressed up for an estate sale run, just because it’s fun. But in general, you’re probably going to be in an environment where there’s dust, lots of people, and if it’s an older home, perhaps no air conditioning. You want to be able to move freely and comfortably! 

What are some strategies for estate sale shopping?

Shopping strategy is dependent on whether you know what you want or if you’re simply perusing. Here are some beginner-friendly estate sale tips that work for both. 

If you know what you want, act fast

If you have your eye on something specific, I recommend you shop early on the first day of the sale. That way, you will know for sure it’s available. Once you’re inside, find the item first so it doesn’t get scooped up by someone else. If you’re not sure where it is, ask someone who is running the sale. They’re there to help and can point you in the right direction. 

Wait for deals until the last day

With each day that passes, many sales will discount all items in an effort to get them sold. You will get the best deals on the last day of the sale! 

Hold onto items you like

If you’re simply browsing an estate sale, take your time and do a full walk-through of the entire house. If there are smaller items you like, hold on to them while you continue to browse. You can always put the items back, but hanging on to them ensures they’re yours.  

Secure large items quickly

When it comes to furniture, most sales will have “sold” signs that can be placed on them when purchased. If you know you’d like to buy a piece of furniture, alert a sales associate. They can help, place a sold sign on your item, and you can then continue browsing at your leisure. 

Use the hold table

Many sales have a hold table that is usually by the front door where you check out. You can place items here so you’re not carrying them around while you shop. 

Are there rules or etiquette I should be aware of?

No need to be afraid here, estate sale etiquette is mostly common sense. Since you’ll be shopping in someone’s home, respecting the space is obviously important. Being kind and courteous to others is expected as well—don’t cut in line, don’t take other people’s items, avoid small spaces if there’s a crowd, etc. Long story short, just be kind to the space and to others.

What should I shop for?

What’s amazing about these sales are they’re each entirely unique and each shopper is unique as well. I personally love one-of-a-kind home decor items (I snagged two ceramic swans from the first sale mentioned!), frames, and art. I also bought a blue gingham wing-back chair that is straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie that I love and I’m on the hunt for an espresso machine. 

I’ve seen shoppers leave with boxes of deeply discounted household items like detergent and all-purpose cleaners, vintage clothing, designer bags, costume jewelry, and bedding sets. One woman I met in line at the last sale I attended said she created an entire home gym from items she found at estate sales. The world is truly your oyster! The most important thing is to buy what you love.  That’s the fun part about browsing estate sales, you never know what sort of treasures you’ll find.

5 Tips to Help You Tackle a Monthly Declutter

I’ve always loved organizing—ever since I was a kid, I’ve taken great pleasure in tossing unnecessary items and leaving only the essentials behind. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m by no means a minimalist,—but everything in my apartment has its place and purpose. While I do have stacks of coffee table books and bins of decor that I’m holding onto for a bigger apartment sometime down the line, you’ll never find unnecessary “stuff” in my home. Here’s now I keep my space (and myself) chaos-free.

1. Choose a New Area of the Home to Focus on Each Month

It’s funny because my monthly declutter isn’t something that I schedule on a calendar or note down on a to-do list. Rather, it’s a process that I naturally feel inclined to engage in every few weeks. However, if decluttering doesn’t come as effortlessly to you, that’s more than ok.

Each month, choose an area to focus on specifically, whether that’s your medicine cabinet, makeup drawer, bar cart, junk drawer, etc. Spend time going through the items in this location and determine what you still use and will keep. Then, make a bag of things you can donate or give to friends and make another bag of items to toss or recycle. By focusing on just one drawer or bin each month, you won’t become overwhelmed or make hasty decisions. 

2. Don’t Let Donations Linger

Luckily, my apartment is located right near some great thrift stores where I can easily drop off items I’m ready to part with post-monthly declutter. Make sure that you, too, are efficient about discarding unnecessary goods so that your entryway doesn’t become overwhelmed by reusable bags that you’ve been meaning to take to Goodwill. 

I love to thrift, so dropping off donations also comes with the promise that I can browse for new-to-me items. Yes, this may seem counterintuitive, but honestly, I find that after a cleanout I’m more judicious about what I choose to bring home, since I’m still riding that clutter-free high. 

3. Tackle Cleanouts in Small Increments

There’s no need to completely overturn your schedule to fit in a monthly declutter. Some of my most productive monthly cleanouts have taken place when I’ve had a free 30 minutes during the work day and need a bit of a distraction from looking at my screens.

Don’t assume that you need to devote more than a half hour to an organization task. You’ll feel more productive if you can squeeze a quick drawer cleanout into your regular daily schedule. Of course, an area like your closet will require more availability—save that for a weekend! 

4. Ask Yourself If You’d Keep Something If You Moved

For a while earlier this year, I was toying with the idea of moving apartments, and that made me become extra strict with myself during my cleanouts about what I felt was worth holding onto. While I’ve decided to renew my lease for an additional year, I still find myself thinking seriously about whether I’d really want to carry (or pay a mover to carry!) yet another box of coffee table books (which are my biggest vice!) into a future apartment.

Just as you might ask yourself if you really need that final cocktail when you’re out at a bar, make an effort to also ask yourself during your next decluttering spree whether you really need that extra cookbook or vase or tablecloth—whatever—or if it can instead go into the donation bin. After some time, this will become a habit!

5. Host a Mini Sale

Earlier this summer, a fellow collector friend of mine teamed up with me to host a mini yard sale in our other friend’s basement, and it was such a hit! It may sound cheesy, but it brought me so much joy to see other people enthusiastically pick up books I hadn’t touched in years or swoon over accessories that were begging to be displayed in a new home. Additionally, making a little (actually, quite a bit!) of extra cash didn’t hurt. Just be sure that you spend it on something intentional rather than going on a post-sale shopping spree.

How to Source Meaningful Art

I get it: shopping for art can be intimidating. So many of us often get bogged down by the question of whether or not something’s “good.” PSA: That’s entirely subjective—and up to you to decide. To source and shop for art that adds character to my home and infuses my walls with personality, I lean into my intuition to guide the way. I’m sharing my process and tips below for finding the perfect pieces for your space.

1. Practice patience. Finding the right piece takes time. Full stop. When you have blank walls staring you in the face, it can be tempting to pick up any old piece. But finding meaningful art shouldn’t be seen as a means to an end. Instead, embrace the process. Art is a beautiful opportunity to express your tastes—allow yourself to lean into that journey of discovery and the creativity you’ll explore along the way.
2. Trust your gut. Again, it comes back to your intuition. We can spend so much time questioning the purpose or meaning of a piece when instead, it’s often as simple as noticing how it makes you feel. Does it captivate you, stir up emotion, or spark inspiration? If so, take that as a sign to follow.
3. Reflect on the emotions a piece evokes. As they say: when you know, you know. When I come across a work that I can’t get out of my head, I take that as a sign. If you love the piece on its own, think about how much joy it’ll bring you every time you see it in your home.

Tips for Styling Art in Your Home

Remember: your home is a reflection not only of your unique taste but the experiences you’ve amassed over the years. When styling art, I’m always after a look that feels dynamic and layered but complementary and harmonious to the rest of my home. It’s a balance of making a statement with bold pieces and paring back to create intimate vignettes. These are my go-to tips for styling art in your home.

Use a cohesive color palette as your foundation

Who doesn’t love a mood board? Before taking on any project, I like to first develop a look and feel. To do this, I start with a few words that represent the ultimate look I want to achieve. When it came to curating my Rare Editions Collection with Minted, I wanted the pieces to reflect a sun-bleached palette, leaning into shapes inspired by sensual curves and terra cotta.

From there, I gathered images that represented these words and composed them into a mood board. (See image above.) Think of it as a road map to provide further insight into the pieces you select—and how you’ll style them in your home.

Try a gallery wall

Nope, it’s not just a fleeting trend of the 2010s. Gallery walls let you be playful with your styling, and the best balance a pull toward maximalism with a cohesive, grounding feel. I also love that gallery walls let you incorporate both beautiful pieces and those that might lean more nostalgic (such as family photos). Again, this is where your mood board will be important—because you’ll be styling several pieces in one space, it can become cluttered quickly. Remember the look you want to achieve and let that lead the way.

Create a focal point

Much of styling art depends on your ability to capture the eye and focus the gaze. If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know I love hanging large statement pieces above my living room fireplace or over my bed. (Peep my house tour for a visual.) Because of the size and scale, whatever piece you select will influence the feel of your space—creating impact while still feeling streamlined.

Go beyond the wall

This is one of my favorite styling tricks. So often, we think art belongs exclusively on our walls, but it can be fun and give a fresh feel to your space to hang or lean art in unexpected ways. Y’all know I love a styled bookshelf moment, and layering smaller pieces alongside decorative objects (such as bowls, vases, and books) is a simple way to add character and interest. You can also prop pieces up on the mantel or lean it against a shelf in the kitchen. And don’t be afraid to hang art in unexpected places. Anything from the laundry room to the guest bath are all fair game.

Based in Southern California, Kamala Nahas has always connected with photography’s ability to capture perspective and represent our experience. She excels in spontaneous compositions, responding to her senses and emotions to construct a moment. Rather than documenting a place, she sets out to capture its essence and how its elements makes her feel.

The Work: Twilight Palms

Kamala’s process in capturing this photograph speaks to the care and consideration she gives all of her work. She first took the image using a 1970’s era Polaroid SX-70 instant camera. Then, she gently separated the photograph’s layers by hand to reveal the image within. Using water again, she transferred the thin emulsion to heavy cotton fine art paper and finished it with a UV resistant varnish. For Kamala, it’s evident that the exploration and experimentation inherent in creating a piece is just as exciting as the final, visual result.

This piece’s smaller dimension lends itself well to an intimate corner. I hung it next to the window to complement the soft sunlight trickling through the curtains, and placing it above a rubber plant further emphasizes its verdant, nature-driven feel.

Bethania Lima

Brazilian surface designer Bethania Lima is passionate about pattern, color, and design. Having lived in Chile for the past decade, she recently relocated to Uruguay. I saw a Matisse exhibit a few months back that showcased many of his cutouts. I immediately fell in love with the organic shapes and vibrant colors. This piece resonated with me in the same way, drawing me in through its layered hues and varied, but harmonious forms. I propped it up on my living room bookshelf to infuse a little color into the space and to play up the patina of my favorite clay vessels and vases.

Neutrals are here to stay, but designers aren’t turning to traditional shades of white and grey. “While white kitchen cabinets have been out of favor for a while, many people aren’t ready to commit to bold or saturated hues,” explains Los Angeles-based interior designer Stefani Stein. Instead, she says it’s all about subtle shades that boast a hint of color.

She predicts soft, grey-green in particular, will be a welcome alternative to classic neutral shades. “I have been gravitating toward tints that introduce a hint of color, but still invoke a calm, classic vibe,” divulges Stein. “One of my absolute favorites is Mizzle by Farrow & Ball,” she tells us. “It’s a lovely, soft grey-green, reminiscent of celadon glazed pottery.”

Similarly, Delaware-based interior designer Katie Winnington of C&E Furniture and Design has been enamored with cool grey as an alternative to classic neutral hues. Her “current obsession is Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil,” she tells us. “This shade brings a slight earth tone element from the traditional grey or beige and accents brass hardware beautifully,” she says. 

It’s also a hue with potential staying power, according to Winnington. “The shade is also timeless, so it has longevity and is not heavily trend-driven, giving you space to play with accenting other hardware types or countertop finishes,” she explains. “Avoid contrasting Gossamer Veil with light colors too much as the cabinets will get lost,” she advises.

White Oak

Buh-bye, dark stains. A lighter, more minimalist material is emerging as a new favorite among interior designers. Leanne Ford says she’s partial to white oak, but only when done right. “Historically, the problem with white oak cabinets has been that their most beautiful state is when they’re in their natural, untouched form but then they turn yellow and orange when sealed,” the designer explains. 

Ford recently partnered with Semihandmade to release a line of cabinets, and she says they managed to solve this yellow-orange dilemma. “We came up with, dare I say, the perfect ‘recipe’ for sealing white oak cabinets in a way that doesn’t alter but preserves all their natural beauty,” she explains. The option to pair them with IKEA cabinetry makes them a great affordable alternative to custom wood cabinets.

“Color is back in a major way and here to stay,” predicts Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez, breaking with the minimalist trend. Her pick for the next “it” kitchen cabinet color is “a rich green like Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green,” she tells us. “This green is bold yet grounding, sophisticated yet playful,” she says. It’s “bold enough to feel colorful yet subtle enough that it doesn’t overwhelm you,” she explains.

“If you go bold with the kitchen cabinet color, my recommendation for styling would be to keep everything else relatively neutral,” she offers. “However, you can still use color and keep it neutral! Think light pinks, wood tones, and terracottas.”

The stakes for getting it right are surprisingly high. The ideal white curtains will make your space feel bright and inviting versus smaller and darker than it actually is. To help narrow the search, we asked some of our favorite interior designers to tell us which white curtains they buy over and over again. And they did not disappoint.

Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez swears by pleated white curtains from Restoration Hardware. “The quality is top-notch, the weight of the curtain is sumptuous, and the way the curtain falls is just right,” she explains.

“I am a big fan of contrast, so when hanging white curtains I usually opt for black wrought iron hardware like the Antique Bronze Hardware Collection at Pottery Barn,” she adds. “I am also a fan of hanging curtain rods closer to the ceiling than the window if space permits!” 

One mistake Vasquez sees too often is people buying curtains in the wrong size. “Many times, clients end up getting curtains that are too small and make the room and windows appear smaller than they actually are,” the designer explains. When in doubt, opt for the longer version.

If you’re ready to ditch those IKEA curtains you’ve had forever, Shaun Crha, principal designer and founder of Wrested Interiors, recommends opting for custom drapes. “Everhem is fantastic for upgrading from the big box store curtains since they make it so easy to get all the measurements and proportions right,” he says. “My go-to is their bone fabric with a pinch pleat.”

According to Crha, one add-on is 100% worth the extra money. “I always recommend getting lined panels if you want them to last longer because exposure to UV light really takes a toll on fabric,” advises the designer. Especially if you’re hanging curtains in a sun-drenched dining room, like the one pictured here, or a living room that gets an exceptional amount of light. 

Hot tip: If you’re hanging curtains in your bedroom, Crha recommends a tried-and-true installation technique. “Try a French return rod if you like a classic look and you want to stop that stream of light from hitting you in the face when you want to sleep in,” he says.

When it comes to selecting the right white curtains, Patrick recommends considering the undertones of the shade and keeping your space’s entire color palette top of mind. “This Pottery Barn option—when properly installed and styled—lifts up the room and lends to the whole upscale and warm vibe,” she tells us.

So, how do you properly install curtains? “A good rule for hanging is to install the hardware wider than the frame of the window, and don’t be afraid to go way beyond the window frame to create the illusion of a bigger window,” explains the designer. “The same goes for hanging height. You can go a few inches—or more—above your window frame to create that larger window illusion, but also to offset a ready-made curtain length that may be too long.”

New York-based interior designer Becky Shea is partial to white linen curtains from The Shade Store. 8 Interior Design Tips for Renters

Through trial and error, I’ve discovered that living in a rental doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or a personalized space just because you don’t own your home. There is so much you can do—from paint and wallpaper to upgrading fixtures and lighting. Ahead, I’ve rounded up the best interior design tips for renters from my personal experience in turning beige boxes into warm and stylish homes. 

Paint

Rental walls usually come in a safe, neutral beige which may appear… well, a bit boring. The best interior design tip for renters I can give is to love up on your walls. Give them a makeover by adding a bit of color or by choosing a neutral that suits you better. Even taking your walls from a beige to a crisp white will brighten up your space significantly. Most landlords have no problem with paint as long as you’re willing to paint the walls back to the original color once you move out, or they may let you keep it.

One of my favorite things to paint is the interior of my front door. My current landlord, as well as my previous one, said I can leave it as is when it’s time to move out. I love pink, so my front door is Sherwin-Williams Coral Perfection. It’s a delightful pop of color that makes me smile every time I look at it. Plus, it makes our entryway is cheery and inviting. The whole project was less than $20—proving that paint is an affordable way to make a big impact in your space.

A round-up of interior design tips for renters wouldn’t be complete without giving peel and stick products a major shout-out. Peel and stick is incredible for renters, since they’re temporary solutions for bigger projects that would normally require renovation. Here are a few of my favorites.

If painting is a no-go, peel and stick wallpaper is an excellent option for zhuzhing up your walls. I am a huge fan of adding peel and stick wallpaper anywhere your heart desires. Create a statement wall in your living room or make your powder room pop with a bold color or pattern. I’ve added peel and stick wallpaper to my kitchen, my laundry room, and most recently my home office.

Wallpaper has completely transformed these spaces, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how they’ve turned out. Plus, removable is a breeze—I’ve had no wall damage when I’ve removed peel and stick wallpaper. There are tons of installation YouTube videos you can watch, but I will say from personal experience that it’s not quite as easy as it looks. Don’t be afraid to hire a TaskRabbit or wallpaper pro to get the job done!

Renter floors can range anywhere from vinyl to tile to even hardwood. Peel and stick floor tile now makes it possible for renters to update their floors in a temporary and affordable way. I’ve never tried them myself, but peel and stick floor tiles look fantastic in a kitchen or powder room. They can make an outdated floor feel current without costing a ton as well.

Be sure to thoroughly clean your floors and allow them to dry before applying, and map the tiles out before sticking them to the floor. And just like with any renter-friendly project, check in with your landlord and be prepared for removal when it’s time to move out!

One day when I have an unlimited budget for my home, I will add gorgeous tile to my kitchen. Until then, a peel and stick backsplash will do the trick. It is totally possible to update a rental kitchen without a big renovation. Ah, the dreaded boob light. Most rentals are full of them, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay. An interior design tip for renters that many aren’t aware of is that it’s possible to update lighting fixtures. You can do it yourself (just be sure to turn off all the breakers!) or bring in an electrician. I’ve swapped a dated dining room light fixture for a woven pendant that is much more my style and it makes a huge difference in our space.

I have my eyes set on swapping our overhead entryway light, and even bathroom light fixtures as well. Personalized lighting fixtures can take a boring, neutral space and turn it into one full of character. Just be prepared to take your incredible vintage chandelier with you when it’s time to move out.

Give Your Shower Head an Upgrade

There’s nothing more deflating than a shower with dismal water pressure. My current home came equipped with a handheld shower head that had a very gentle flow of water. I’m not especially fond of shower heads that detach and the water pressure just wasn’t doing it for me. A simple swap couldn’t have been easier, and I now have a spa-like shower with water pressure I find suitable. Most shower heads can be removed simply by unscrewing them, and I applied my fixed shower head in minutes.

Swap Out Your Switch Plates

The little details in your home are everything. Even the smallest of swaps can make an impact in your space. One of my favorites is swapping out switch plates. Your renter switch plates probably match the beige walls, which is less than exciting. But there are many decorative options to choose from to match whatever your aesthetic may be.

Decorative switch plates usually don’t cost more than $20, and they come in brass finishes, different colors and prints, and some even have wavy perimeters. Switch plates don’t come with matching screws, but a little bit of nail polish on the top is an easy way to blend the screw in with the rest of the plate.

If you’d like to plant a garden but aren’t sure where to begin, I chatted with mother-daughter duo Brooke and Leila Giannetti, garden designers at Patina Meadow, as well as Madeline Hooper, host of the PBS TV show Garden Fit, to get their pro tips on all things garden color schemes. Ahead, learn how to design your garden with color in mind, as well as the best color schemes to try yourself!

Where to Begin When Planning Your Garden

Before you head to the nursery, both Giannetti’s suggest taking time to think about the mood you want to set, as well as the intention you have for your outdoor space and garden. “Are you looking to grow food for your family? Are you trying to create a space mostly for visual interest? Either way, there are a few design tips to keep in mind,” the duo suggests.

Just like you would an interior space, they encourage using hedges and trees to enclose spaces, like an outdoor room. “This creates a sense of intimacy and privacy, almost like different rooms in a house.” As far as picking which plants and flowers  are right for your garden, Hooper says to lead with your heart and to not think too hard about what’s right or wrong. “Surround yourself with colors you love,” she says. “Allow yourself to react to what surprises you and delights you about a garden.”  

Hooper also suggests noticing what plants and flowers are working for your neighbors—that means the conditions you both share work well! And finally, if you’re feeling nervous as a beginner gardener, Hooper encourages taking some pressure off and to have fun. “It truly doesn’t matter how you start. You make mistakes. Plants die. You learn by trial and error!” she exclaims.  

Why a Color Palette Is Important

“A garden color scheme provides unity and coherence in garden design. It ensures that all elements work together harmoniously, creating a space that is not only visually appealing, but also emotionally resonant,” the Giannetti’s share. “A cohesive color palette helps avoid visual clutter and creates a sense of calm and order, which is particularly important in a garden meant for relaxation and enjoyment.”

If you’re not sure what colors look best together, or just feel afraid to commit, Hooper suggests pots to start. “You don’t have to make the commitment to dig them into the ground necessarily,” she remarks. Knowing what colors and flowers you’re drawn to—as well as the ambience you’d like your outdoor space to have—will set the tone for creating the garden of your dreams.

“Ultimately, your garden should reflect your tastes and preferences. Choose colors that make you happy and create a space where you love to spend time!” the Giannetti’s add.

Soft Pastels

If you envision a garden fit for afternoon reading, morning meditation sessions, or casual dinner parties, a pastel color palette would be the dream. “We absolutely adore soft pastel palettes—light lavenders, pale pinks, and soft whites. This combination evokes feelings of calm, serenity, and soothing tranquility,” the Gianetti’s share. Hooper is also a fan of this color palette. “In my garden around the pool, I like to stick to cool pastel colors that go with the water color and gray stone coping,” she explains. 

Hooper loves various shades of pinks, blues and yellows and shares that Achillea moonshine, Astilbe ‘Peach Blossom’ and Geranium Roxanne look better and better in her garden each year. Both Giannetti’s love mixing purple with pink or white. “For a soft pastel palette, we would use plants like lavender and thyme, which not only add beautiful pastel hues but also a wonderful scent,” they share. “Pair these with pink and white roses or hydrangeas. The key is to maintain a limited palette and focus on texture for added interest.”

Deep, Rich Hues

If you have an eye for the dramatic and want your home to pop, darker colors may be more your speed. The Giannetti’s recommend pairing deep, rich florals with lush greenery. “Dark tulips in spring, and rich purple hydrangeas in summer are excellent choices,” they advise. “Complement these with foliage plants like boxwoods and yews to add some structure, while complementing the color scheme. You could even add blackberry vines to add a functional touch of rich beauty!” 

Blackberry vines will, of course, produce fruit and the berries will turn from a deep red to black as they ripen, naturally providing a beautifully rich color palette. Another option? Orange and yellow blossoms provide stark contrast to deep purple blooms, making purple and orange an unexpected, yet beautiful color scheme to try. Mix gold and orange avens (Geum spp.) or yellow Hollyhock Alcea ’Spotlight Sunshine’ with purple or crimson scabiosa (or pincushion flower) for a stunning jewel-toned garden.

Monochromatic

A garden color scheme doesn’t need to include multiple colors. In fact, going monochromatic and picking just one color is a fantastic choice, especially if you have a color you’re especially fond of. For Hooper, that color is red. “The dramatic effect of planting beds or borders of one color is also a fun challenge, and for years I have had a red color-themed bed that I adore,” she gushes. “It’s more upkeep because I have to replant Dahlias Bishop of Llandaff each season, but they look great with red peonies, Dianthus Telstar Scarlet, and Echinacia purpurea ‘Sombrero Salsa Red’.” 

“Combining different blooms in similar colors—like light lavenders from herb plants such as lavender and thyme, with pink and white rose varieties or hydrangeas—adds depth and variety without overwhelming the senses,” the Giannetti’s note. As with any garden color scheme, decide on the mood you want to create for your garden, then choose your color accordingly. A blue garden with blue hydrangeas, Phlox paniculata ‘Blue Boy’ or Delphinium ‘Million Dollar Blue’ will be calm and serene. A yellow garden with Alchemilla mollis or Baptisia ‘Caroline Moonlight’ will be bright and cheerful. 

Keep in mind that a monochromatic garden can include various shades of the same hue, so don’t be afraid to plan your purple garden with pale lavenders as well as deep purples that almost read black. “Even with a limited color palette, you can create a lot of visual interest through texture,” the Giannetti’s add.

Rewilding

If you’re interested in a maximalist color palette where anything goes, rewilding is a garden trend you’ll love. Also referred to as meadowscaping, this garden trend relies on native grasses and wildflowers being allowed to grow freely.

“This idea of garden chaos being positive is a big deal,” Hooper remarks. “If you want different colors, you can do that, and it looks smashing.” If you have dreams of running through your own wildflower meadow, see what many would typically consider weeds in a new light. “Whatever seeds are in the soil—let them grow,” Hooper suggests. “Then keep what you like, and pull out what you don’t like.”

You can learn what is native to your area by doing a quick search through the National Audubon Society. From there, notice what colors and plants you’re drawn to. Because rewilding is in fact a bit wild, your color palette can remain simple if that’s more your vibe. Stick with a monochromatic palette and choose flowers in the same shade, or select up to four different hues for a multi-color meadowscape.

It’s evident from the images alone that Brittany has a gift for contrasting natural light with moody elegance. Rather than feeling cramped or cluttered, she opened up the space with built-ins, strategic window placements, and paint colors that evoke a pastoral calm. Brittany layers complementary materials to capture a visual interest while maintaining an underlying coherence. She understands the importance of playing to the opposing ends of the design spectrum—working with negative space to find the inherent beauty within.

I sat down with Brittany for an inside peek into how she approached the project. From designing for the homeowners’ lifestyle to infusing the space with an enduring allure, this is how Far Studio makes a house a vibrant, beautiful home. Step inside, let’s take a tour.

When someone walks into a space and says it looks like a Far Studio interior, then I have done my job. 

Brittany Wurzak Hakimfar

Brittany Wurzak Hakimfar is the founder and lead designer of Far Studio, a full-service Interiors & Lifestyle studio is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brittany graduated from George Washington University with a major in interior design where she then began her career in New York City working for Mark Cunningham. In 2012, she moved to Los Angeles to work with renowned AD100 designer Waldo Fernandez for five years where she honed her skills in high-end residential and commercial design. She then returned to her hometown of Philadelphia to begin her own design firm and start a family.

Tell us about the space. What were the homeowners’ goals in remodeling the home?

This was a wonderful home to design! It was on a charming street in a great and walkable area, and the home had a lot of charm and potential. The homeowners were a young family with one little girl and a little boy on the way. They wanted the house to feel special and timeless while still being practical for small children.

The house needed a full remodel and some space planning. In the beginning, we wanted to best figure out the flow of the home and how the clients would live. The master suite also needed a full rework. We took that space down to the studs and completely relaid out the rooms to give a beautiful primary bathroom with a large shower, vanity and tub, and a large walk-in closet. This made for an amazing master suite.

The other rooms were reworked as well, and every finish was touched so that it felt like a new home with the qualities and characteristics of a classic house with a lot of character.

There’s a certain moodiness that feels elevated but approachable expressed in the paint, dark trims, and neutral accents throughout the home. What is the inspiration behind the color scheme?

Paint can transform a space, and we created a color story early on for the home. Each room had its own mood and feeling that the color helped to create. I also love doing lighter furniture in a darker room to create a beautiful contrast.

Talk to us about a room that you particularly love.

My favorite room in this house is the kitchen. The green we selected was Farrow & Ball Lichen, and it was a perfect color for the space. Then, we used the beautiful handmade pendant lights from Lostine and a stunning Rohl bridge faucet. 

You layered in some incredible decor accents. What were some of your greatest finds? Where are your favorite spots to source vintage decor?

For accessories and styling pieces, we love to use vintage and found objects. We spend a lot of time sourcing pieces for our studio that feel special and unique. We source from all over the U.S. and the world!

You have a talent for keeping the spaces you design balanced and timeless, as well as minimal yet warm. What’s your secret? 

I love to use natural and good materials that will stand the test of time.

Bringing in texture and unique neutral colors to create a warm and layered space is key.

What advice can you share for those who are new to design?

Find your style! I have a strong sense of style and of what I like and that can lend itself to many different styles of homes, yet there is always an element that carries through my designs that feels like me. When someone walks into a space and says it looks like a Far Studio interior, then I have done my job.

With some research, testing, and learning about the layout and organization of my kitchen cabinets and drawers, I realized all that was stressing me out was poor planning and a lack of systems to make my space function as best it could.

When it comes to kitchens, no one’s space looks the same. We approach food differently, so of course, your kitchen setup needs to work for you! Luckily, to get some inside tips that all of us can benefit from, we tapped Ellen Bennet, the founder of Hedley & Bennet and host of Kitchen Glow Up, to give us the inside scoop on how we can most effectively and intentionally approach our kitchen design.

Storage is a key element of the kitchen. What is your approach?

After my kitchen is set up to function at its best capacity, I can start thinking about how to make it look good. In a professional kitchen, the zones include prep, cook, serve, store, and clean. I love to keep that setup in my home kitchen, too. My prep station is always ready on my counter with my giant cutting board and my Hedley & Bennett knife set.

Functionality is the number one priority of my kitchen.

For my storage area, everything has to be easy to find and read the labeling so it’s easy to grab while I’m cooking. I love having two sinks, especially one extra-large one that all-sized dishes can fit into. You might have specific passions that will adjust your stations differently. It’s easy to customize and prioritize these zones and stations while still keeping structure in the kitchen.

What ingredients do you always keep on hand?

I always have a protein in the freezer: ground beef, ground turkey, or bone-in chicken. Eggs and cans of tuna are other proteins I always like to have on hand. I also have rice in my Zojirushi so there’s always fresh rice going. Avocado is always at the ready and some sort of lettuce or leafy green and pickle in the fridge.

With these ingredients, I can cobble together a rice bowl and customize it based on what else I have on hand. I also always have cooked beans in the fridge. I like to have an assortment of veggies that are easy to steam. For fresh veggies, I have Persian cucumbers that I can easily add to a bowl or eat as I’m running out of the house. I also have onions, shallots, and some kind of citrus to add flavor to whatever dish I’m throwing together. Other staples are olive oil, Fly by Jing’s chili crisp, and good butter. Between all of that, I can make all kinds of things easily. 

What are your go-to storage tips?

I have clear basket bins on the bottom right part of the fridge that are designated just for veggies. I take all produce out of their packaging and put them on a cloth. This helps avoid moisture and makes them last longer. Clear containers are a must to help me see the items I have in my fridge.

If you can see it, you’ll eat it.

What are your must-have spices?

Peppercorns, Maldon salt, and kosher salt are musts. Diaspora has high-quality, ethically sourced spices. I recommend getting whole seeds of spices when you can. Powders can be pretty old by the time you get them, which makes them lack flavor. If you have the whole seed, you can crush them, grind them, or toast them and it’s much tastier. Botanica has a spice called Magic Spice that’s amazing to have on hand. Garlic powder, sumac, and za’atar are great as well.

What are your best pantry organization tips?

Stick to one type of container! Don’t have every single thing in the original container you bought it in. You can buy a set of containers on Amazon for dirt cheap. It’s easier on the eye and easier for things not to get lost. If you haven’t used it in the last six months to a year, get rid of it. I tend to land with a bunch of random stuff, so just try and be honest with yourself about the spices you’re going to use and get rid of the rest.

It’s okay to not have every single spice you’re ever going to need for every random recipe you’ll use.

I would also use the same label for all the spices. The more variation you add, the harder it is to look at. Labeling them is important. You can also buy a little museum putty to keep them in place so they don’t move when the drawer gets opened.

What do you consider kitchen essentials?

I would consider the following to be my kitchen non-negotiables:

• Fish spatula/spatula
• Whisk
• Tongs
• Larger-than-normal spoon that can be used for tasting, serving, and plating
• Microplane/zester
• Set of knives—chef’s, utility, and bread (make sure they’re sharp!)
• A good cutting board and a nice stack of kitchen towels. (Put those towels under the cutting board to hold them in place.)

What specialized kitchen appliances do you think are worth the splurge?

Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of single-use tools. A good tool should be used in more than one capacity. For example, I could use a zester in place of a garlic press. There may be some things on a very specific occasion, such as a cherry pitter if you’re baking a pie, but I generally like to keep these items multi-use.

What have you learned from helping others renovate and reorganize their kitchens?

The power of a dedicated pantry is real because you’re able to look at all the food you have versus not knowing what’s in each cabinet. Having expired foods out of your kitchen is major. People don’t realize how much expired food exists in their lives until they go through and remove it all. 

Kitchens are a magnet for random stuff that you don’t need in that space. Give everything a parking spot and it will help you start taking things out of your kitchen that don’t belong there and move those items to its parking spot elsewhere in your home. This will end up giving you so much more space in your kitchen and will impact your daily cooking life and beyond.
